Course Offerings: Titles, Descriptions, Objectives, and Assigned Instructor

All courses are in 3 and 5-week increments, consisting of 20 hours of self-guided, asynchronous lessons. With weekly due dates for assignments and activities, lesson modules include videos, readings, quizzes, discussion posts, peer reviews, and a final project. Courses are not credit-bearing. Certificates of completion are issued. EBI’s TEFL/TESOL certificate is a 150hr program, consisted of 8 courses and a live teaching practicum.

Courses are taught by Professor Tacor Natalie Sims, PhD, founder of EBI. Dr. Sims creates or edits all course content. Qualifications include a BA and MA in English, a Post-Masters Certificate in College Teaching, and a PhD in Education, with teaching certifications in Texas, Indiana, and South Carolina for ESL 4-12, ELA 5-12, ELAR 4-12, and ELAR 7-12. Dr. Sims has an Indiana administrative license, certifying her abilities as Director of Curriculum and Instruction for grades P-12. She has taught English at the elementary, secondary, and postsecondary levels since 2011, serving bilingual students beginning in 2012.

Effective Methods for Emergent Bilingual Educators in K-12 Education

Course Description and Objectives

After this online course, educators will be able to identify and classify ESL students into four ability levels; demonstrate understanding of ELPS (English Language Proficiency Standards); incorporate ESL accommodations into lesson planning; create daily language objectives; apply frequent checks for understanding to lesson delivery; articulate the duties of the LPAC; understand the TELPAS process; contrast the differences in teaching ESL and non-ESL students; compile common first languages and cognates of EBs in their region; track EB progress towards English language mastery; compile options for communicating with parents who speak different languages; reflect on his or her own ESL practice; and develop and defend a plan to improve services for Emergent Bilingual students who are educated in a face-to-face or online setting, using current scholarly research and best practices shared throughout the course.

Course Description and Objectives

Geographical Awareness for International ESL Educators in K-12 and Adult Education

Course Description and Objectives

Upon successful completion of the course, participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of the distinctions between TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) and TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages).
